  31. HI there, fellow icon collectors! Here is a cool collection of icons 
  32. which I have collected from various sources including:
  33.  
  34. * Over 5000 Icons converted by Tony Clemens & I from the Macintosh (various original authors)
  35. * Converted from bitmaps (GIFs, JPGs etc.)
  36. * Some we drew from scratch
  37. * A few pinched from other places on the 'net
  38.  
  39. Only the best hand picked and converted icons end up in this collection!
  40. (I am sure you well agree as there has been over 500,000 known downloads)
  41.  
  42. These icons are most useful to Windows 95/NT 4.0 users who can use them for 
  43. their shortcut folders and much more.  Use the them on your desktop 
  44. to make it more fun! 
  45.  
  46. YOU MUST BE IN HIGH COLOR OR TRUE COLOR TO USE 256 COLOR ICONS.

  48. THIS EDITION REQUIRES MICROANGELO IF YOU WANT TO MANAGE THESE ICONS!

  51. Some icons will also be 48x48 as well as the usual 32x32 for extra detail!

  53. 2. NEW IN THIS VERSION
  54. ======================
  55.  
  56. The complete icon collection from Tony Clemens, every icon individually
  57. converted from the Macintosh.  About 85% of this collection
  58. now consists of icons he converted from the Macintosh computer.  
  59. Unfortuately Tony has very little time to manage his web pages and
  60. would rather speed the time converting icons from the Macintosh 
  61. computer.  So he asked me to integrate the two collections to create the 
  62. best collection EVER!
  63.  
  64. 3. USAGE WITH SHORTCUTS (Or Aliases? :) IN WIN95
  65. ================================================
  66. 1. Right click a shortcut icon you wish to change
  67. 2. Click Properties
  68. 3. Click Change Icon . . .
  69. 4. Click Browse
  70. 5. Change the Files of type to All Files
  71. 5. Find the icon library you wish to use from the path C:\WINDOWS\ICONS
  72. 6. Select the icon libary you want and Click OK
  73. 7. Scroll accross to select the icon you want, then OK!
  74.  
  75. You can't currently change the icons for actual folders like on the Mac,
  76. if any programmers are reading this take note!

  78. 4. MAC -> PC ICONS
  79. ==================
  80. To convert the Mac icons to the PC I did the following:
  81.  
  82. 1. I took a screen shot of the Mac desktop and saved it in PICT format.
  83. 2. Renamed the files with PCT file extension.
  84. 3. Copied the files to a PC disk and loaded them into Corel Photo Paint
  85.    (I would have used PSP but it did not support PICT :(
  86. 4. Cropped the icons and saved them as BMP files
  87. 5. Imported the BMP files into Microangelo
  88. 6. Saved them to disk (obviously!)
  89.  
  90. There are a few programs that can automate this now, please see the links
  91. on my web pages.
  92.  
  93. 5. 256 COLOUR ICONS
  94. ===================
  95. I now have a program, Icon Colour Level, that will edit the following
  96. registry entries automatically.  Double click it and check Show icons
  97. using all possible colours to use 256 colour icons!
  98.  
  99. You can also give yourself 256 colour icons without any external 
  100. program by modifying the following registry entries:
  101.  
  102. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Config\0001\Display\Settings
  103.  
  104. Look for a BitsPerPixel string. Then under:
  105.  
  106. HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics
  107.  
  108. add a string value:
  109.  
  110. Shell Icon BPP
  111.  
  112. and give it a value corresponding to the previous (16 or 24)
  113.  
  114. NOTE: If there is no WindowMetrics key just add it; the single entry 
  115. for Shell Icon BPP will work.
  116.  
  117. 6. ICONS FOR BMP FILES
  118. ======================
  119. To make BMP files have icons that are thumbnails of the bitmaps
  120. themselves, double click on:
  121.  
  122. Icons for BMP files.reg
  123.  
  124. or modify the following registry entry:
  125.  
  126. HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Paint.Picture\DefaultIcon\
  127.  
  128. change the value of (Default) to %1
  129.  
  130. 7. FIXING EXPLORER ICONS
  131. ========================
  132. If you ever find that your icons don't show as they should in Explorer,
  133. try double clicking on:
  134.  
  135. Fix Explorer Icons.reg
  136.  
  137. This will restore the icon related entries in the system registry.
  138.  
  139. 8. CONVERTING ICO FILES TO GIF/BMP FILES
  140. ========================================
  141. 1.  Get the icons that you want on screen
  142. 2.  Press PRINT SCREEN
  143. 3.  Load Paint Shop Pro (http://www.jasc.com)
  144. 4.  Select Edit, then Paste
  145. 5.  Drag a box around the icon you want
  146. 6.  Select Image, then Crop
  147. 7.  Select File, then Save As and voila!
  148.  
  149. Here's a better method :-
  150.  
  151. 1.  Load the icon into Micronagelo Studio
  152. 2.  Select the icon by dragging a box around it
  153. 3.  Select Edit, then Copy
  154. 4.  Load Paint Shop Pro (http://www.jasc.com)
  155. 5.  Select Edit, then Paste
  156. 6.  Select File, then Save As and bobs your uncle!

  160. I don't 'spose you care who I am do you?  I wouldn't care if I was reading
  161. this! I cant take all the credit because I only drew a few of them, but
  162. I wouldn't mind credit for putting this collection together!  All I ask 
  163. is that if you have some good icons, mail them to me and i'll add them to 
  164. the collection!  Also if you have ANYTHING else you think I might like such
  165. as furry/toon and sonic pix, anything to do with games, get uuencoding & 
  166. attaching those files!
